On Thursday, December 17, 1903, Orville and Wilbur Wright made the first successful powered flight in a heavier-than-air machsine at Kitty Hawk on the coast of North Carolina. Building on the knowledge of numerous other people sbefore them, they were the first to achieve free, controlled, and sustained flight in an airplane. Although the longest flight they made that day was only 59 seconds, it marked the beginning of the aviation age.
